We publish what gold buyers actually pay. We can do that because we are not one of them.
Why this exists
If you search for what your gold is worth, you will find a page of calculators that all return the same figure: the melt value of the metal. It is a useful number and it is not the number you need. What you need to know is what someone will actually hand you, and how much that varies depending on who you sell to.
Almost nobody publishes that, and the reason is structural. The majority of gold calculators on the web are operated by refineries, pawn chains, cash-for-gold services and jewelers — businesses whose margin depends on the difference between melt value and what they pay you. Publishing that spread works against them.
We do not buy gold, do not broker it, and have no stake in which offer you accept. That is the entire reason this site can say what it says.
Who makes it

To be explicit about what that does and does not mean: we are independent tool builders, not certified appraisers, assayers or precious metals dealers. We are good at getting arithmetic right, sourcing data carefully and explaining where numbers come from. We cannot look at your ring and tell you what it is. Anyone who claims they can from a web page is selling something.
Every method we use is written out on the methodology page, including the parts we have not yet verified. If you find an error in our arithmetic or our sources, we would genuinely like to hear about it — corrections make the site better and we publish them.
How it is funded
The site is free to use and carries no paywall. It is funded by advertising and, in future, by affiliate commissions from buyers we list.
Neither of those changes a single figure on the site. Gold prices come from market data feeds and are pure arithmetic. Payout ranges come from the published methodology and are not adjusted for who pays us. If we ever list a buyer because they pay a commission, the link will be marked as such — see our affiliate disclosure.
As of today there is no affiliate program active on this site at all. When that changes, this page and the disclosure will change with it.
